Research & EBPEvidence-Based Practice Guide
Evidence-based practice is the skill nursing school is really teaching. This guide walks the full cycle, from question to application.
What EBP Actually Is
EBP integrates the best available research with clinical expertise and patient values. It is a decision-making process, not a paper format.
The Five Steps
Every EBP assignment follows the same arc.
- Ask: form a focused PICOT question
- Acquire: search CINAHL, PubMed, and Cochrane
- Appraise: judge quality, level, and applicability
- Apply: connect findings to a specific practice change
- Assess: define how success would be measured
The Evidence Hierarchy
Not all evidence is equal, and instructors expect you to know the order.
- Level I: systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Level II: randomized controlled trials
- Level III: quasi-experimental studies
- Level IV: observational and qualitative studies
- Level V: expert opinion and case reports
Appraising a Study
Appraisal is judgment, not summary.
- Sample: large and relevant enough?
- Design: randomization, controls, clear methods?
- Limitations: acknowledged honestly?
- Applicability: does it fit your population?
Applying Evidence in Assignments
The so-what section is where grades are won. Name who does what differently, the barriers, and the outcome measure. Vague endorsements lose points; specific implementation plans earn them.
